Skyzoo has been one of the most consistent artist in the game for some time now dropping multiple albums and mixtapes since 2006. From signing with Duck Down to working with the likes of 9th wonder and Dj Premier Skyzoo has solidified his position as a bona fide vet in Hip Hop with his talent only getting better with time. Following the release of "Peddler Themes EP" last summer, “In celebration of us” is the Brooklyn MCs 4th solo album. It includes a 15 track list, featuring productions from MarcNfinit, Arte Mitchell and repeat collaborations with !llmind and Apollo Brown to name a few. "In Celebration of Us" is exactly as the title states. The album is a celebration of the progress and everyday struggles of the black community. The album addresses social issues such as fatherhood, police brutality, gentrification and the oppression that still exist today.
Skyzoo delivers structured lyricism and well executed concepts that get better with each listen. A few stand out tracks include "Bakers Dozen" produced by Apollo Brown with its dark baselines and Raheem DeVaughns soulful vocals. The record is reminiscent of D'Angelos "Devils Pie", Skyzoo paints a vivid picture on the detrimental realities of gentrification and the effects it has on the community. In "Crown holder" Skyzoo reminds us how he holds it down, with its familiar sampling of Soho's "Hot music" !llmind slows down the tempo and resurrects that classic Hip Hop vibe. “In Celebration of Us offers up a 90's Hip Hop jazz feel in combination with catchy piano loops, head nodding bass lines, melodic horns, and effortless transitions, coupled with well timed beat switches. His matured progression is evident within his lyrics, flow, delivery and most of all content. Skyzoo definitely does not disappoint on this album and proves Hip Hop is very much alive and well. We at Critix Music give “In Celebration of Us” a well deserved 4 out of 5X’s.
